About this clip
Orson Welles Roasts Dean Martin
Orson Welles was the celebrated actor, director and broadcaster behind Citizen Kane, with a commanding voice and theatrical presence ideal for comic contrast. Dean Martin was a singer, actor and effortlessly relaxed television host whose celebrity roast specials became a showcase for famous comics and entertainers.
In this clip, Orson Welles turns that contrast into roast material, teasing Dean Martin with the affectionate exaggeration and show-business one-upmanship that defined the format.
